Army of Two: The 40th Day Game Review

http://blog.dr4g0nus.com/files/2012/09/armyoftwo.png

Army of Two: The 40th Day, the sequel that made the entire series worse than it already was, in my opinion at least. Probably doesn't help I didn't like the first game but goddamn it was a fuck tonne load better than this piece of crap that people call a game. Maybe I am going a little over the top and i'll leave you to have you're own opinion from here, but just had to say that I hate it.

Now for the actual game, its set in modern day Shanghai where an all out war has broken out and you (Salem) and your friend (Rios) are tasked to put an end to the war and get rid of anyone who tries to stop you. At the beggining shit blows up, innocent people die and buildings collapse (kind of like every James Bond or Mission Impossible movie) and all of this gets you pretty excited for the game and makes you want to play it so much more. For me this all turned out to be a massive dissapointment.

Rios and Salem, pretty cool masks but thats about it.
The one good thing about the game is the fact you get to make a decision over whether you want to let certain key characters survive or whether you kill them. But, its not just this I found a cool concept, its the fact that regardless of any decision you make it goes into a back story and shows how you decision affected that person and others around them. No game has really featured anything like this and I thought it was a genius thing to do.

Something I should have really mentioned earlier is the fact that its 3rd person shooter, and I'm not really a fan of any shooters, but 3rd persons really get on my nerves. I don't know what it is, might be the fact you can't picture it from the characters point of view or that its harder to aim with your gun, but I just don't like them. This is one reason I hate the entire series but don't let me change your mind.

One of things you can do in the game is change and upgrade your weapons and guns and change the look of them. There is also something in the game called Aggro, and the player with the most Aggro basically has the most attention from enemy forces and gets aimed for. So when upgrading and changing your gun you want to be careful of the one that can gain the most Aggro as you'll be the one being shot.

Yes, thats a Pepsi can on a FWH Scar!
Rounding everything up, for me there was more bad than there was good, and I haven't really covered the storyline too much and I'll leave that for you, but lets just say I didn't like it at all. I completed it, I just didn't like it. So for story line I give it a 4/10. I also give the gameplay a 5/10 as it was 3rd person and I hate that, but apart from that it wasn't too bad.

The graphics also weren't too bad so i'll give them a 6/10 as I can't really complain about them, they just weren't nothing special. I don't want you to hate the game just because I said I do, by all means go out and get it and see what you think for yourself, I'm just giving my opinion, use it how you will!

Thank you for reading this and i'm grateful for all the support i'm getting, I'm thinking of starting a plan where I upload every Sunday, Monday, Tuesday and Thursday instead of every day. I'm wondering whether that would be better for you as it will be less for you to read and it will be easier on me as at the moment i'm finding it hard to get the time in to do this. So please let me know and leave a comment below so I can see what you think about this.

Until next time, cheers! - Derry

Red Dead Redemption Game Review

Red Dead, a series that had gained quite a bit of notoriety and is well known in the world of gaming. The whole series is owned, written and developed by gaming giants Rockstar who also develop the Grand Theft Auto series and L.A. Noire. The newest game in the Red Dead series, however, is Red Dead Redemption.

Red Dead Redemption is set in early America (The time of cowboys and the wild west) and follows the story of John Marston, a cowboy outlaw who had been in loads of trouble with the guards in western America. He sets out to gain revenge on some of his old comrades who betrayed him and got him sent to jail. However, his jail time is not yet over and he has to help the officers with some of their problems and help them catch or kill his comrades, and in return he his freed, or so they say.

One of the reasons he wants to be released is because he is being stopped from seeing his family and going back to his home, so he wants to help the officers so he is able to see his wife and son again. Along his journey Marston meets many new friends, and makes many new enemies, but he always deals with his enemies in the best way possible, by killing them!
Our hero, John Marston! What a cool guy.
There is also a multiplayer mode where you can travel the wasteland of Western America freely with up to 16 or 24 people (Not sure which one) and you can complete little side missions, unlock new characters, unlock new mounts and advance in level systems whilst still having the option to just roam the wasteland finding other online players and killing them for gun.

There is also gametypes to play like Team Deathmatch, Capture the flag and all the other kinds of general gametypes you get when playing online games. Depending on what you prefer you can choose what to play, but throughout all the gametypes your level and experience carries over. You also get challenges to complete and these can be fun to do but you there are some that are obviously more challenging than others but I found these more fun.
Very large and vast landscape but it is beautiful!
For the rating now, and I think it is an amazing game! I mean just writing this review has made me want to replay the game really bad, so I think from that I can tell its a really good game. For the story line I would give it a 9/10 as it is a storyline that offers many twists and suprises and like all of Rockstar's storylines it is really long and keeps you wanting to play.

For gameplay/multiplayer I would give it a 8/10 as well, it is good, but nothing amazing or new, the multiplayer you can tell it is just like GTA 4 and this is really clear, but the multiplayer is still really good. Graphics are pretty good to be fair and I'm going to give them a 8/10, they weren't nothing amazing that had people talking, but it was still really good.

Overall I give the game a 8/10 which I think is well deserved, and I think that just about sums up my review. This game is one of my favourite games ever for storyline and I truly loved it, I think I'm actually going to start a new save and play through it again. Thanks for reading this blog and you can always check it out on my new site here:

Also, make sure you look out for the table below to quickly see what I think without having to read the whole review, if you want of course, but I will suggest that you read the whole thing. But anyways, until next time, cheers! - Derry

Gears of War 2 Game Review

Sequel of Gears of War, it follows closely in the steps of Gears of War and is an amazing game, but still has some faults. Set shortly after the events of the first game, it starts with a small commentary from the Locust Queen who briefs us about the last 15 years and how the Locust War evolved. It then jumps to a hospital, where Marcus, Dom, Anya and the new recruit (and brother to Anthony Carmine) Benjamin Carmine are doing some basic training for Benjamin, when some Locust forces show up and force the Delta Team to go through the Hospital to get rid of the Locust and force them to retreat.

Throughout the game it is clear that humanity is struggling to survive the Locust War and they are obviously losing. So they make up plans to help them get back in the war and put strain on the Locust forces. In this game you are also introduced to the Lambent, who are members of the Locust army who have been subjected to too much Imulsion and it causes them to mutate and fight against the Locust forces as well as you.
Lambent Drone, what a nice glow.
With the Lambent showing up it helps take some strain of the COG forces but also makes things worse as they now have two enemies to be wary of. The campaign is really good and a definite Xbox 360 must play game, I mean you get to ride giant worms, big ass tranporters and cars across icy lakes, what more could you ask for?

Skorge also makes a re-appearance in this game, but looking more bad-ass than ever, it is pretty obvious early on that he'll be a boss at some point in the game and I looked forward to it tbf, thought it would be a really bad-ass scene, and whether it was or not, i'll leave that to you!

Nothing better than fake dreadlocks!
There is a multiplayer for this game, and there was for GOW 1 (Which I didn't really talk about) but the multiplayer was really dissapointing for this game. I found it was so much worse than in Gears 1! There was one good things that was added and I loved playing and that was the 'Horde' mode, where you are put into a map and have to survive against up to 50 waves of Locust and the more you survive the more points you get, I found this gametype so much fun, but there were times it was boring or took too long to get to wave 50.

Now, its time for ratings again! For Storyline I thought I'd give it a fair 8/10 as there were points when it felt slow and I got bored or it was just the same thing over and over again, but there were times it was amazing and I didn't want to put the pad down. For gameplay I'd give it a 7/10 as there was so many bugs, and they never bothered to sort it out. For graphics i'd give it a 8/10 as they were better than Gears of War, but they were nothing worth talking about.

Altogether I think the game deserves a 8/10 and I think that is a fair score. It's just a shame because I think they could have made it so much better if they'd just spent a little more time getting rid of bugs, adjusting things and making the multiplayer a better, user friendly place.

Thanks for reading this and I hope you agree with my ratings, if not what did you think of it and what would you have rated it? Let me know in the comments! But until next time, cheers! - Derry

Dishonored Game Review

When I first heard of this game I wasn't too impressed by it and it didn't really come across to me as a good game. It reminded me of Hitman and Splinter Cell at first and I liked them games but i'm not a fan of games where you have to sneak around, which is why this didn't appeal to me. However, it was much better than I could have ever imagined and if its managed to impress me, who didn't like the idea, it should be able to impress anyone!

You are put into the shoes of an assassin called Corvo Attano in a world where Whale Oil runs anything that needs electricity to work. Corvo was the bodyguard of the Empress, but she is assassinated, and as Corvo is the only suspect he is sent to Death Row where he decided on a quest of revenge. He intends to assassinate the assassins and the people who ordered the assassination to get his true revenge and so follows the story of Dishonored.

What did that poor rat ever do to Corvo!
The story takes place in a city called Dunwall, and above the entrance to this city is the sentence 'The boldest measures are the safest'. This saying surely makes sense for such a capital city like Dunwall which is ridden with plague. However considering all of this, the game has a beautiful and interactive setting that is pushing the boundaries on gaming forever. Just walking through a street you see so many different things and your attention is suddenly grabbed by these things from graffiti on walls to the magnificent buildings and structures.

Throughout the story line of Dishonored you get choices at every turn and every choice you make can highly influence the game play you can even decide to not kill anyone at all if you're a nice guy but this doesn't help you in any way really. Sometimes you get the feeling there's too much choice and you might have trouble deciding what exactly to do to get the objective done. But this is just something to get used to with Dishonored as choice is one of the things Dishonored is renowned for. I do prefer this kind of game play where you have a choice for everything rather than being forced down a certain path not having a choice in the matter.

Players who really take the time to enjoy their experience are rewarded with more augments and upgrades for your character. You do this by finding more runes, bone charms and money and with this you'll become more badass. I found when playing this game that I would restart from a save or checkpoint to try playing it differently and seeing what exactly I could do.
A Bone Charm, looks nothing like a bone!

I found the graphics were truly amazing and think that it is one of the most beautiful game settings in recent games. It is truly incredible and not many games are even coming close to the standard that Dishonored has set. As beautiful as it is on consoles (I played on the Xbox 360) watching it played on PC is so much better and is certainly a good thing for all the PC gamers out there!

Now for the ratings! I thought for story line it deserved a 8/10 as it was lacking in some places and I thought some of the targets you had to assassinate felt a bit set-up and too easy, especially when I had a load of abilities and upgrades to help my sneaking and assassination abilities. However I do like the fact that no two plays will be the same!
Graphics deserve a 10/10 for the reasons I described above, I think they are just amazing and couldn't get much better.

Overall I think it deserves a 8/10 as it is an amazing game but is lacking in some areas, however apart from that it couldn't be better. It is certainly a game everyone should experience at least once. Being one of the biggest games of 2012 it is a game that is going to be talked about for a while, especially with the different endings and game plays that many other games don't really offer nowadays. I hope you enjoyed this Blog/Review and again hope you can share it with your friends for me to help it get notoriety.

Now tell me, what do you think of this game and would you check it out now? until next time, Cheers! - Derry

Avatar: The Game Game Review

Avatar, an amazing movie, couldn't have been better and so you would expect with such a big budget. But obviously they didn't spend enough money on the game as it was absolute rubbish! For a start the game doesn't even follow the story of the movie, so I reckon it should have been called something completely different. In a way, from what I played, it completely doubts the story of the movie and that makes no sense.

You play as Able Rider, a new signals specialist, who you can customise the look of and decide the sex of. You work for the military on Pandora and are sent to work in an Area called Blue Lagoon to do missions for the people in the area. You get to a point in the game where you can make a choice between the Na'vi and the RDA and each choice greatly changes game play as if you choose the Na'vi you play as a Na'vi as do missions for them against the RDA, but if you choose the RDA its the opposite.

In my choice I choose the Na'vi, and I don't know whether it was just this choice, or whether it's the game altogether but I found it really slow paced and boring. It really wasn't a game I enjoyed and I never got round to completing this game, which is a rare thing for me to not do.

What the Na'vi look like, don't know why I chose them.
The game also has a multiplayer mode, which I thought was pretty bad and didn't enjoy at all. I felt it was really one sided and always had the Na'vi winning, which I never got the chance to enjoy because everyone would choose the Na'vi and make it so I had to pick a Marine. The multiplayer wasn't too popular anyways and never really had a lot of people playing.

I don't think i'm the only one who thought this was a massive disappointment but it really was to me. I expected it to be so much better as the film was amazing, but then again film to game adaptions are rarely any good. For ratings overall I give it a 4/10 as it was just rubbish in every way and you could tell they didn't give it much time or thought. I really wouldn't suggest anyone get this game, unless you are in it for the exploration and story so you can expand your knowledge of Avatar, if not then its not worth the £5 you can get it for!

I'm now going to start putting the ratings I give things at the bottom of the page, as well as in the post so that if you're in a rush you can just scroll to the bottom of the page and have a look at what I've rated it. I'm also currently working on a website that will be up shortly, just making some final adjustments and putting all my older posts on there ready for when I publish it.

I appreciate everyone who bothers to look at my blog, and wish I could show my gratitude more. But as I can't I will just thank you all and keep on posting for you as often as possible. I am thinking of changing my plan around a little, but it will stay the same for now until I have decided on a good plan. So until next time, cheers! - Derry
